Two solar farms in Minnesota turned land once considered unusable into a thriving ecosystem over the course of five years. By choosing to plant native wildflowers and grasses beneath the rows of panels instead of using gravel or turf, the project operators created a habitat that attracted significant insect life. This initiative started in 2018, and researchers tracked the progress through 358 separate surveys until 2022.
The findings were significant. While solar production remained the primary goal of the site, the ground underneath began to support a wide range of biodiversity. Insect abundance tripled across the two sites. More impressively, the population of native bees grew twentyfold during the study period. This change turned a previously silent patch of dirt into a productive piece of land.
The impact extended beyond the fence line. Researchers discovered that the pollinators housed within the solar farm frequently crossed into neighboring soybean fields. This interaction provided unplanned pollination services to nearby farmers, demonstrating a tangible agricultural benefit from the restored habitat. The study suggests that small changes in site management can lead to measurable environmental and economic gains.
Leroy J. Walston, a landscape ecologist at Argonne National Laboratory, led this research, which was recently published in Environmental Research Letters. While the team notes that these results depend on active management rather than just the presence of solar panels, the shift in maintenance practices provides a clear path forward. Transitioning from constant mowing to native planting reduces upkeep costs for operators while providing a sanctuary for pollinators. The project offers a practical model for how renewable energy facilities can serve dual purposes in rural landscapes.
