Poland is facing a significant energy hurdle as record-low water levels in the Vistula River force utility giant Enea to throttle production at its coal-fired power stations. The Kozienice and Połaniec plants have seen output drops of 1.3 GW, which represents about two percent of the nation's total energy capacity. This volume is sufficient to power over one million average households, leaving the grid under pressure during an intense summer heatwave.

Environmental advocates point to this situation as a clear illustration of the limitations inherent in fossil fuel infrastructure. Thermal plants require massive volumes of water for cooling, yet as river levels recede, these facilities become unable to operate at full capacity. This creates a feedback loop where the very infrastructure that contributes to climate change is rendered ineffective by the environmental shifts that change brings.

Despite these operational failures, the government continues to propose new gas-fired capacity at the Kozienice site. Critics argue that adding fossil fuel demand in an era of tightening water supplies is illogical. The incident has intensified calls for a quicker transition toward wind and solar energy technologies, which do not rely on large-scale water consumption to generate power for the grid.

While Poland has expanded its solar capacity by over 20 GW in recent years, coal still accounts for more than half of its current electricity generation. The path forward for energy security in the region seems increasingly linked to diversifying the energy mix. As the drought conditions persist, the reliance on high-water-demand power plants remains a critical risk for the national grid.
