Spanish authorities have confirmed that seven British nationals were among the thirteen people killed in the wildfires that swept through the Almería province last Thursday. Post-mortem examinations conducted by local officials established that twelve of the victims were foreign nationals. Alongside the seven Britons, the victims included three individuals from Belgium, one from France, and one from the United States. The final victim was a Spanish citizen. All thirteen victims were adults, consisting of eight women and five men.

The fires devastated the region, forcing the evacuation of nearly 1,500 people. The blaze, which burned approximately 7,000 hectares of land, severely impacted the village of Bédar. Local residents reported harrowing experiences during the event. Malcolm Timbrell, a 70-year-old British resident of Bédar, described surviving by moving between abandoned cars as they caught fire around him. His account highlights the rapid progression of the flames.

Families have begun confirming the loss of their relatives. Danielle Gillam-Kirton of Sheffield announced that her parents, Pete and Fran Gillam, were among those who did not survive. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has stated it is providing support to affected families and maintaining communication with Spanish authorities throughout the ongoing identification process.

This incident adds to a pattern of severe weather conditions in Spain, where extreme heatwaves with temperatures exceeding 40C have become more frequent. While the fire is now contained, the scale of the destruction across the Almería province marks this as one of the deadliest wildfire events in the country. Local authorities continue to process the impact of the disaster as investigations into the origins of the blaze occur.
