Seventeen-year-old María Javiera Valenzuela has proposed a new energy solution for research stations in Antarctica. Her concept addresses the heavy reliance on diesel generators, which are currently the primary power source for polar bases. These generators are expensive to fuel and their emissions create pollutants that settle on snow and accelerate ice melt.
Valenzuela suggests a hybrid microgrid system that combines renewable energy sources like wind and solar with a nuclear microreactor. Under this model, solar and wind power handle energy needs when environmental conditions allow. When these sources are unavailable due to the harsh polar climate, the nuclear microreactor takes over to provide consistent, reliable electricity. This approach is designed to function in extreme, remote conditions without the logistical burden of constant fuel shipments.
Calculations from the project suggest that this hybrid system could prevent approximately 3,254 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year at a large Antarctic base. The proposal was presented as part of Chile’s 2026 Antarctic School Fair, where students are encouraged to present technical solutions to real-world scientific problems.
While the concept is purely theoretical for now, it brings attention to the challenges of remote energy production. Any real-world application would face significant hurdles. Beyond the engineering requirements, the deployment of nuclear technology in Antarctica must navigate the strict rules of the Antarctic Treaty System. Regulators would need to oversee issues related to transport, safety protocols, and the management of radioactive materials.
Despite these barriers, the proposal serves as a practical look at how small-scale nuclear technology might eventually support research efforts in isolated regions. It shows how students are applying their education to address the difficult environmental trade-offs found in modern polar science.
