Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide state of emergency today in response to severe wildfire risks. The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Alert, citing high winds and persistent drought conditions that create a dangerous environment across Washington.
This proclamation establishes a statewide ban on most outdoor and agricultural burning. The restrictions remain in effect through September 30. Activities such as burning yard debris, trash disposal, land clearing, and open bonfires are prohibited under this order. Liquid-fueled stoves and gas grills are permitted if used over non-flammable surfaces at least five feet away from dry vegetation.
The state reports that over 1,000 fires have consumed approximately 425,000 acres this year, marking the most significant burn total since 2021. With over 200,000 acres currently burning across 12 major sites, officials emphasize the importance of preventing new ignitions. The emergency order grants the state access to the Emergency Management Assistance Compact for additional resources.
This ban does not supersede more restrictive measures already in place from local governments or the Department of Natural Resources. Residents should verify local regulations before conducting any outdoor activities during these hot and dry summer months.
