In 1970, the U.S. attempted a bold environmental experiment off the coast of Florida. Broward Artificial Reef Incorporated received approval from the Army Corps of Engineers to dump two million tires into the ocean to create an artificial reef. The goal was to provide shelter for marine life, boost biodiversity, and protect coastlines from erosion. It seemed like a win-win scenario, even gaining support from major corporate entities like Goodyear.
The reality proved to be a disaster. The tires were held together by steel clips and nylon straps, which were no match for the saltwater environment. Over time, the materials corroded and the bundles broke apart. Instead of providing a stable home for fish, the loose tires began to drift. Ocean currents pushed them onto existing natural reefs, where they caused significant damage and stunted growth, ultimately harming the marine ecosystems they were meant to support.
Today, the cleanup effort is a slow, grueling process. The project serves as a stark reminder that even well-intentioned environmental interventions can cause long-term destruction if they are not backed by sound scientific research. Since 2006, crews have been working to remove the tires from the seafloor. Progress is slow, with current projections suggesting that the halfway mark for the cleanup will not be reached until 2033.
