Climate extremes fuel explosive wildfires in Canada and the U.S., experts say
The 2026 fire season in North America is outpacing historical records. As of mid-July, the United States has seen nearly 40,000 fires consume 3.6 million acres of land. This activity levels exceed the 10-year average for this time of year by approximately 10,000 incidents and one million acres burned. The American West remains the primary focus of these incidents, with Colorado and Utah experiencing the most significant impact.
Simultaneously, Canada faces a critical wildfire season. While current acreage burned is roughly aligned with the 10-year average, smoke from these fires frequently drifts into the American Midwest and the Northeast. This cross-border movement of pollutants creates widespread air quality concerns for millions of residents, far removed from the actual blaze locations.
Climatologists and field experts point to a convergence of factors driving this intensity. A combination of prolonged drought, record-setting heat waves, and historically low snowpack in the Rockies and Cascades has left vegetation parched. The lack of snowpack in particular removed a key moisture source for soil, allowing terrain to dry out weeks ahead of the typical summer cycle. Researchers note that high temperatures triggered premature snowmelt, extending the fire window.
Climate scientists from institutions including Stanford University indicate that human-caused climate change is a significant driver of these conditions. Data suggests that approximately half of the long-term increase in burned acreage across the western U.S. is attributable to shifts in temperature and atmospheric demand. These trends are loading the environmental dice, making the landscape more susceptible to ignition regardless of individual forest management practices.
The National Interagency Fire Center maintains an above-normal risk assessment for the American West through the remainder of the summer. Forecasters remain cautious as the region moves toward autumn, noting that seasonal winds have not yet arrived. With several months of the fire calendar remaining, officials continue to monitor how these climate-enabled conditions will affect the coming season.
