More than 200,000 residents and holidaymakers have evacuated or entered lockdown as severe wildfires sweep across southern Europe. France and Spain are currently facing a critical situation, with authorities in France ordering a total evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula. Boats are transporting people off the coast as fire threatens the only land access route to the area. Over 19,000 hectares have burned in this region alone, marking this as the worst fire in local history according to officials.
Spain has officially declared its first national emergency regarding wildfires. The decision follows the merging of multiple large blazes outside Madrid and in the province of Ávila. The Spanish government confirmed that central authorities are now assuming control over regional powers to manage the disaster. The scale of the destruction is significant, with 29 major forest fires recorded so far this year, compared to an annual average of nine. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that all available resources are in use to protect the population.
International support is currently arriving through the European Union civil protection mechanism. President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that reinforcements including specialized aircraft from Croatia and Portugal are assisting ground crews. Despite the efforts of hundreds of firefighters and water-bombing planes, many fires remain uncontained due to extreme heat and high wind speeds. The European Forest Fire Information System reports that the severity of these fires has broken records for this time of year.
Experts note that climate conditions are creating dryer soils and more frequent extreme weather events. Scientists warn that Europe is heating at twice the global average rate. As the fires continue to burn, officials are emphasizing that the priority remains the safety of those displaced by the encroaching flames.
