Researchers associated with the HistoGenes project examined genomes from over 300 individuals interred at various sites within northwestern Hungary. Their findings, published in Science on June 11, 2026, suggest that the transition from Roman rule to the Early Middle Ages involved far more complex social dynamics than simple conquest by invading barbarian tribes.

The research, led by Yijie Tian and István Koncz, demonstrates that populations in the Little Hungarian Plain experienced a distinct shift in genetic heritage following the collapse of Roman administrative authority. During the imperial era, this specific territory acted as a hub for a globalized network, hosting inhabitants with diverse ancestries from Southern Europe, Africa, and Asia. This diversity served as a hallmark of Roman cosmopolitanism, maintaining infrastructure and cooperative systems across the region.

The Lombard Expansion and Genetic Patterns

As the Roman influence waned, the local genetic landscape underwent a significant transformation. Excavated sites from the post-Roman era revealed an influx of individuals carrying northern European genetic markers. Scientists link this demographic change to the movement of the Lombard Kingdom, which historically pushed from the north of the Danube into the former Roman provinces during the early sixth century. This was not a singular, localized event but a sustained process of human migration.

Evidence gathered by the team suggests that these incoming groups did not merely replace the existing population. Instead, the period saw the emergence of a multi-layered society, where migrants with northern genetic roots interacted with local populations possessing deep southern European ancestry. This convergence helped create new hierarchies and political structures that defined the post-Roman era. The findings provide a rare, data-driven look at an era often obscured by the bias of contemporary Roman writers who lacked direct access to these evolving rural communities.

Challenging Historical Assumptions

Past academic consensus frequently characterized this period as a time of displacement and chaotic barbarian rule. Because written records from the sixth century are sparse, historians historically relied on biased accounts that framed newcomers as purely destructive forces. The HistoGenes project, funded by the European Research Council, proves that material culture found in graves does not always mirror the biological ancestry of those buried there. Newcomers integrated into existing systems in ways that varied significantly from village to village.

Patrick Geary, a professor emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study, notes that the project has identified both localized, gradual migrations and massive, rapid shifts from as far away as Eastern Asia. These results dismantle the binary view of barbarian conquest versus Roman stability.
