NGeneBio is shifting its focus beyond oncology to address the growing market for weight-loss therapeutics. The South Korean firm announced it is developing specialized genetic and blood tests designed to predict how patients respond to GLP-1 drugs, such as Wegovy and Mounjaro. These treatments have surged in popularity, but clinicians often face challenges in managing individual patient responses and potential complications.
The development plan involves two distinct diagnostic tools. The first is a screening test intended to gauge a patient's genetic predisposition to the drugs and identify potential risk factors before treatment begins. This includes analyzing genetic variants such as GLP1R and GIPR, which regulate appetite and metabolic processes.
The second tool is a monitoring test designed for use during treatment. It tracks markers in the blood to detect early signs of pancreatic or biliary tract damage, which are known, though less frequent, side effects associated with GLP-1 usage. The company aims to apply its existing expertise in DNA sequencing and liquid biopsy technology to these new tests.
To advance this project, NGeneBio is establishing a patient group in collaboration with local obesity clinics. This effort will help them gather critical data on drug efficacy and biomarker identification, which they plan to use in future drug trials and research. While the firm has not yet provided a timeline for product launches or regulatory approval, this pivot signals a clear intent to capture value in the obesity treatment space.
This marks a significant departure for the Kosdaq-listed company, which has historically centered its business on cancer diagnostics. By moving into the obesity market, NGeneBio is looking to provide clearer data for clinicians managing weight-loss treatments. The project reflects a broader trend of diagnostic companies applying precision medicine tools to common chronic conditions.
