Researchers at the University of California, Davis, recently developed a new genetic atlas for chickens. This tool maps how genetic variation influences gene activity across more than 100 breeds and 28 different tissue types.

Traditional breeding programs focus on observable production traits like growth and feed efficiency. This new map offers a different approach by identifying genetic signals linked to biological resilience. By looking at these signals, scientists can better understand how DNA variants affect health and disease resistance.

One application of this atlas involves addressing avian influenza. The research provides a framework to identify birds with natural defenses against specific infections. This allows breeders to select parent stock based on these biological responses rather than relying only on physical output metrics.

While the technology is not yet a standard commercial tool, it marks a shift in how genomics is integrated into the poultry industry. Further validation is required to confirm how these genetic signals perform under standard commercial conditions, but the project establishes a path for more predictable, resilient chick production in the future.
