A recent study of 168 elite Turkish athletes provides preliminary evidence of a potential link between specific genetic variations and the risk of exercise addiction. While exercise is a core component of professional performance, persistent loss of control over training despite physical or social impairment points toward behavioral patterns similar to other addictions.

The research, published in Scientific Reports, utilized a genome-wide association study (GWAS) approach to examine thousands of genetic variants. Researchers identified 11 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that reached a suggestive significance threshold. Among these, variations in genes such as ADGRB3 and ZNF480 showed potential associations with addiction-related symptoms. The study noted that rowers in the cohort displayed higher average addiction scores compared to other disciplines, though the researchers cautioned that these findings reflect preliminary data from a heterogeneous group.

Genetic influence is often discussed in the context of performance, but this study highlights the need to consider biological vulnerability regarding behavioral health in sports. The team observed that certain identified genetic markers correlate with altered gene expression in brain and nerve tissues, which may influence reward sensitivity and stress response mechanisms.

It is important to note the exploratory nature of these results. The sample size remains modest for genomic studies, and the researchers did not have an independent replication cohort. Future work will require larger, more uniform groups to confirm these markers. As exercise addiction lacks formal diagnostic status in current psychiatric manuals, this research serves as a step toward establishing a biological foundation for the condition within the athletic community.

This pilot study underscores the complexity of behavioral phenotypes. By identifying these candidate loci, the authors provide a base for future investigation into the intersection of sport psychogenetics and compulsive behavior.
