Abdul-Samed Sulemana, widely known as Awuche, passed away on Monday at Tamale Teaching Hospital. At 33 years old, he was celebrated across Ghana and beyond as the country’s tallest man. Reports indicate that he died following a severe infection related to sores on his legs. His death has drawn significant mourning throughout northern Ghana, where he was a figure of community pride.

Awuche’s life changed significantly in his early twenties. While working at a butcher’s shop in Accra, he began a period of rapid growth that eventually led to a diagnosis of Marfan syndrome. This rare genetic disorder affects the body's connective tissue, causing abnormal height and various health complications. The condition forced him to leave his job as a driver and ended his ability to participate in sports like football.

Despite the physical difficulties that followed his diagnosis, Sulemana maintained his public profile and remained connected to his hometown of Gambaga. His story gained international attention when it was documented in 2022, capturing his life at 7 feet 4 inches tall. Relatives believe he likely exceeded that height in the years since the documentary was filmed.

Medical care remained a challenge throughout his life due to the costs associated with his condition. Earlier this year, Ibrahim Mahama, a prominent businessman and brother of the Ghanaian President, provided financial assistance to cover his medical expenses. His family has opted to hold his burial in Tamale to manage the expected attendance from the community.
