Myriad Genetics Works With AWS to Make AI for Faster Document Handling
Myriad Genetics processes 1.5 million diagnostic tests each year, ranging from cancer screenings to prenatal health assessments. Managing the associated paperwork for these tests is a massive task that traditionally requires months of manual effort to secure insurance reimbursement. To handle this, the company created an internal tool called Image Genius, which automates diagnostic and billing operations.
The initial rollout of the tool in 2024 faced challenges with high maintenance costs and inconsistent accuracy. The system struggled to distinguish between actual test orders and supplementary medical notes, which created bottlenecks in the revenue cycle. Myriad turned to Amazon Web Services to refine the architecture and reduce these expenses.
By building the tool on Amazon Bedrock, Myriad now accesses various foundational models to pick the right option for speed and accuracy. This transition has changed the document processing time from an average of 10 minutes to just 20 seconds. According to company leadership, this shift allows staff to reallocate hundreds of hours every month toward other priorities.
The updated version of Image Genius successfully launched in early 2026. The company intends to expand this automation technology into its oncology and mental health departments by 2027. This move represents a shift toward more automated administrative workflows in the healthcare diagnostic sector.
