Why Do Psychiatric Disorders Persist in Humans?
A study published in Nature Communications sheds light on why psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia, autism, and ADHD persist in the human population. While these disorders cause significant hardship, researchers suggest that the genetic variants associated with them may also confer specific advantages, including enhanced creativity, specialized knowledge, and improved reaction times. This insight helps explain an evolutionary paradox that has long puzzled scientists.
Lead author Diego Londoño-Correa and his team utilized genome-wide association studies to break down intelligence into distinct categories such as crystallized knowledge and processing speed. By moving away from treating intelligence as a single, uniform metric, the researchers identified positive correlations between specific genetic profiles and creative or analytical traits. This approach challenges the traditional view of psychiatric disorders solely as biological impairments and suggests they exist on a spectrum where associated genetic variants might be retained due to these secondary benefits.
The findings also highlight the role of pleiotropy, a genetic phenomenon where a single gene influences multiple, seemingly unrelated traits. This interconnected nature of the genome means that traits are not easily isolated, and selecting against one could inadvertently eliminate beneficial characteristics. This adds a critical dimension to discussions around genetic engineering and the potential risks of selecting embryos based on limited criteria, as parents might accidentally influence other essential developmental pathways.
While this research does not yet offer new clinical treatments for mental illness, it contributes to a shift in how these conditions are understood. Recognizing that the same genetic building blocks associated with psychiatric risk are also tied to valuable human traits may help reduce social stigma. It underscores the complexity of human biology, where what we define as pathology is often deeply linked to the diversity of human capability.
