Human Traits Beyond Inherited Genes
Researchers at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria have uncovered new details regarding how parental genes influence child development. A study published in Cell Genomics explains that a child's traits are shaped by more than just the DNA they inherit directly.
The team analyzed data from over 30,000 families to look at height, body weight, and school performance. Their findings show that the environment created by a parent’s genetic makeup plays a significant role in a child's characteristics. This concept, known as genetic nurture, means that parents influence their children through both the genes passed down and the household environment their own DNA helps create.
Beyond genetic nurture, the study examined the parent-of-origin effect. This refers to how certain genes function differently depending on whether they were inherited from the mother or the father. Scientists have long struggled to separate these variables, but the new method developed by this international team allows for a clearer distinction between direct genetic inheritance and indirect parental effects.
The research holds consequences for how scientists approach medical treatments and social policy. By identifying which traits are driven by direct inheritance versus environmental factors, researchers can better determine which genetic markers are viable targets for personalized medicine. These results also indicate that health and education policies need to account for the impact of the family environment as a significant factor in long-term outcomes.
