SuperAgers retain exceptional memory through mechanisms beyond genetics
New research from the University of Chicago Medicine provides clarity on the nature of SuperAgers, individuals in their 80s and 90s who maintain memory performance comparable to people decades younger. For years, scientists wondered if these individuals simply possessed a unique genetic advantage that shielded them from the risks of Alzheimer's disease.
A team of researchers tested this hypothesis using a large cohort of 142 SuperAgers and 89 cognitively average peers. By analyzing APOE genes and polygenic risk scores—which account for thousands of genetic variants linked to Alzheimer's—they sought to identify if a low genetic risk profile explains this high level of cognitive function.
The findings, published in Alzheimer's Research & Therapy, indicate that SuperAgers do not possess a significantly lower inherited risk for Alzheimer's disease compared to their peers. Even when examining rare protective genetic variants, the study found no statistical difference between the two groups. This suggests that exceptional memory in later life is not merely a result of avoiding inherited risk factors.
This evidence directs focus toward alternative explanations for cognitive resilience. Researchers at the Healthy Aging & Alzheimer's Research Care Center suggest that biological, behavioral, and social factors play a larger role than once assumed. This study serves as a shift in how experts view brain health, proving that maintaining a sharp memory is not an inevitable decline but a state that may involve protective pathways currently under investigation.
