These landraces possess the diverse DNA that the commercial Hass variety lacks. By studying these wilder counterparts, scientists hope to identify the traits necessary for disease resistance.
This research is a response to the vulnerability of a sixteen billion dollar industry. The original Hass mother tree died in 2002 from root rot, a persistent fungal threat. As climate patterns shift and pathogens spread, the lack of genetic variation in standard supermarket avocados becomes a liability.
