FFAR Rapid Funding Explores Genetic Immunity to Avian Influenza
The Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research, Iowa State University, and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation are launching a $300,000 project to combat avian influenza. This initiative focuses on identifying specific genetic factors that influence how birds respond to H5N1 and H7N9 viruses.
Agricultural producers currently face significant economic losses and operational disruptions due to these viral threats. While biosecurity remains the standard defense, recent outbreaks prove that additional tools are necessary. Researchers now aim to map the genetic mechanisms that allow some birds to resist infection naturally.
Dr. Joaquin Caceres of Iowa State University leads the multidisciplinary team. By using genomic tools to identify host-directed interventions, the group intends to move beyond traditional treatments that target the virus itself. Since influenza viruses evolve rapidly to bypass standard vaccines, identifying stable host pathways offers a more durable solution.
