A recent study conducted by the Healthy Aging & Alzheimer’s Research Care Center at the University of Chicago challenges a long-standing assumption about aging. For years, scientists suspected that individuals known as SuperAgers—people in their 80s and 90s with the memory capacity of someone decades younger—maintained their sharp cognitive abilities because they simply lacked the genetic markers associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers analyzed DNA from 142 SuperAgers and 89 cognitively average older adults across the United States and Canada. They focused on the APOE gene, which is known to influence Alzheimer’s risk, and calculated polygenic risk scores that aggregate thousands of genetic variants. The results show no significant difference in genetic risk between the two groups. Being a SuperAger is not just about avoiding disease risk factors.

This finding represents a shift in how experts view brain health. Instead of focusing solely on the absence of disease, researchers are now looking for active biological and environmental mechanisms that protect memory.
