Future of UK physics threatened by ‘ruinous’ funding cuts, says Institute of Physics
The Science and Technology Facilities Council has announced significant funding cuts for international research projects, sparking concern across the UK physics community. The Institute of Physics characterizes these reductions as ruinous, warning that they threaten the nation's scientific standing and the ability to train future researchers.
Financial challenges, including inflation and rising energy costs, have forced the Council to re-evaluate its budget for the period between 2026 and 2030. While core discovery research receives some protection, the decision impacts major programs such as the LHCb experiment upgrade at CERN and support for the Electron-Ion Collider. Additionally, funding for the e-MERLIN radio telescope network at Jodrell Bank is set to end in 2028.
The Institute of Physics President, Paul Howarth, highlights that these choices risk long-term damage to the country's scientific capability. He notes that such actions jeopardize international collaborations and may discourage young people from pursuing scientific careers. Despite a record investment in UK Research and Innovation, the Council remains committed to finding ways to balance its books by 2029.
Physics departments and researchers have expressed deep unease over the potential loss of expertise and infrastructure. The reduction in operating time for facilities like the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, combined with the loss of specific international partnerships, poses significant questions about the future of UK-led science.
