Astronomers Detect an Atmosphere on a Potentially Earth-Like World
Astronomers recently made a discovery that changes how we view the search for life in space. Researchers identified an atmosphere surrounding LHS 1140 b, a rocky exoplanet located 48 light-years from Earth. This planet orbits within the habitable zone of its host star, where temperatures might allow liquid water to persist on the surface. While scientists have confirmed the existence of thousands of exoplanets over the last two decades, verifying the presence of an atmosphere on a rocky, Earth-like world remained a significant technical challenge until now.
The research team, led by Collin Cherubim of Harvard University, focused their efforts on detecting helium escaping from the planet. They developed a theoretical model predicting that this specific gas would leak into space if the planet possessed an atmosphere. To test this, the team used the Warm Infrared Echelle Spectrograph on the Magellan Clay telescope in Chile. During a transit event where the planet crossed in front of its star, the instrument captured the signal of escaping helium.
David Charbonneau, head of the Harvard Department of Astronomy, noted that the data provided statistically firm evidence for the atmosphere. This finding suggests the atmosphere has been stable for more than three billion years, which increases the likelihood that the planet could support environmental conditions necessary for life. The success of this observation validates the team's mathematical model and suggests that ground-based observatories can play a critical role in future atmospheric studies of distant worlds.
Looking ahead, the research group intends to determine the chemical composition of the atmosphere on LHS 1140 b. The goal is to investigate whether the planet contains surface oceans or other markers associated with habitability. This achievement marks a transition from simply finding rocky planets to characterizing them. As telescopes become more precise, this method of monitoring escaping gases provides a new path for scanning other worlds for signs of life.
