Montgomery County astronaut returns to Earth after 8 months in space
NASA astronaut Chris Williams is officially back on solid ground. After spending eight months aboard the International Space Station, Williams returned to Earth on Sunday morning alongside two Russian cosmonauts. The crew touched down in a remote region of Kazakhstan inside their Soyuz MS-28 capsule.
The mission spanned 241 days, during which Williams traveled over 102 million miles and completed more than 3,800 orbits of the planet. While in space, the team focused on a range of scientific objectives, including research into cancer treatments, advancements in semiconductor manufacturing, and tests related to spacecraft water purification systems. Williams also executed two spacewalks to maintain the station's robotic arm and solar power systems.
Though born in New York City, Williams calls Potomac, Maryland home. He is a graduate of Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring and holds degrees from Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before NASA selected him for the astronaut program in 2021, Williams conducted research on radiation and imaging techniques for cancer care. His background also includes service as a volunteer firefighter and EMT.
His safe arrival marks the conclusion of a productive expedition. Ground crews assisted Williams and his fellow cosmonauts, Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev, out of the capsule shortly after landing. The team remains under observation as they adjust back to the gravity of Earth.
