Central Florida native and DeBary local Luke Delaney is preparing for a significant milestone in his career. The NASA astronaut will serve as the pilot for the SpaceX Crew-13 mission to the International Space Station. A graduate of Deltona High School and the University of North Florida, Delaney’s selection for this flight marks his first trip to orbit.
The mission is scheduled to launch from Kennedy Space Center in mid-September. Delaney joins a four-person international team for this long-duration expedition. The crew includes NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins as commander, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov.
Once they reach the station, the crew will join Expedition 75 to manage research and station operations. The team plans to focus on specific scientific studies regarding human health in microgravity, including blood circulation research, vision changes in space, and stem cell experiments. Aside from scientific work, the team will perform routine maintenance on the station to keep systems operational.
Delaney often speaks about his formative years in Florida, where he spent time watching Space Shuttle launches. He views this flight as an opportunity to encourage students to look toward careers in aerospace engineering and exploration. Before the September launch, the crew will complete final quarantine protocols and systems integration checks at the Kennedy Space Center.
