This satellite image of a 'hummingbird' isn't what you think
A recent satellite image from the NISAR mission has caught the public eye, revealing a shape that looks remarkably like a hummingbird in flight over Antarctica. While the visual is striking, it is not a bird. The image displays the Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja mountaintop in East Antarctica as it sits amid a flowing glacier. The shapes interpreted as feathers are actually deep crevasses formed by stress within the moving ice.
This imagery comes from the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar, a joint venture between the United States and India. The system uses high-powered radar instruments to look past standard optical limitations. Unlike typical cameras that only record reflected sunlight, NISAR uses microwaves to peer beneath the snow and into the structure of the ice itself. This capability produces a clear view of the landscape that would otherwise remain hidden from traditional satellite cameras.
Launched one year ago from India, the NISAR satellite monitors almost all of the land and ice surfaces on Earth every twelve days. The project produces massive amounts of data daily, helping scientists track diverse planetary changes. Beyond glacial movement, the mission provides data on landslides, urban development, agricultural patterns, and seismic events like earthquakes. The hummingbird image serves as a demonstration of the radar system's precision and its ability to turn complex scientific data into clear, detailed maps of the planet's surface.
