US-India Satellite Delivers Data, Reveals ‘Hummingbird’ in Antarctica
The joint US-India NISAR satellite mission is now providing high-resolution radar data to researchers globally. One of the first images released captures the Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja mountaintop in East Antarctica. The radar technology reveals deep, fractured crevasses in the ice that appear as sharp green lines, while smoother ice surfaces show up in magenta. The unique way these signals reflect off the landscape creates a visual pattern that bears a striking resemblance to a hummingbird.
Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory produced this imagery using L-band radar waves. Unlike traditional optical sensors that show a white expanse, this radar system can penetrate layers of snow and ice to map the structural features underneath. This capability allows scientists to track how glaciers move and change over time with greater precision than previously possible.
This data release is part of a broader effort to make satellite findings accessible to the public and the scientific community. The mission, which launched in July 2025, uses both L-band and S-band radar to monitor Earth’s changing surfaces. The teams plan to provide ongoing access to these datasets to support studies on natural hazards, climate patterns, and ecological shifts.
Users can access these processed radar files through the Alaska Satellite Facility Distributed Active Archive Center. With the satellite scanning nearly all of the planet’s land and ice surfaces every twelve days, this mission serves as a significant resource for understanding our environment. The project remains a central collaboration between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation.
