NASA's Psyche Spacecraft Captured a Time-Lapse Video of its Mars Flyby
NASA’s Psyche spacecraft successfully completed its Mars gravity-assist maneuver, marking a significant milestone in its multi-year trip to the asteroid belt. The flyby, which occurred earlier this year, allowed the mission team to test the onboard science instruments under real-world conditions as the craft approached within 3500 kilometers of the Martian surface.
Data gathered during the encounter confirms that the imager, magnetometer, and spectrometer are performing as expected. The magnetometer, a key component designed to detect magnetic fields, successfully measured the intense activity in the bow shock region where solar winds interact with the planet’s magnetic field. This test is vital for the mission’s eventual goal of determining if the 16 Psyche asteroid represents the exposed core of an ancient protoplanet.
In addition to the magnetometer, the spacecraft’s multispectral imager captured a detailed time-lapse video of Mars. The camera identified geological features including the large Huygens crater and the southern polar ice cap. Beyond the immediate imagery, the team used the flyby to calibrate the camera’s sensitivity to scattered light and practice detecting small moons at a distance. These techniques will be applied when the spacecraft reaches its target in 2029 to search for potential moonlets orbiting the asteroid.
The trajectory adjustment provided by the gravity assist puts the spacecraft precisely on schedule for its arrival in August 2029. Mission managers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory confirmed that the maneuver was executed as planned. With the hardware validated, the spacecraft will resume solar-electric propulsion thrusting later this year to continue its journey toward the main asteroid belt.
