Spacecraft Sent to Rescue NASA Telescope Is Having Its Own Issues
NASA faces an unexpected hurdle in its effort to preserve the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The rescue mission, led by Katalyst Space Technologies, is currently stalled after their LINK servicing spacecraft developed serious technical faults while in orbit.
Engineers report that the LINK spacecraft is tumbling, caused by the failure of two of its three reaction wheels. These components are critical for maintaining a stable orientation in space. Additionally, the team identified a loss of functionality within the cold gas thruster system. While ground control remains in contact with the craft, the mission to rendezvous with and boost the aging telescope into a safer orbit is currently paused.
The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, launched in 2004, has spent over two decades studying gamma-ray bursts across the universe. Atmospheric drag has gradually pulled the satellite toward Earth, leading to concerns regarding an uncontrolled reentry. NASA previously halted scientific operations on the telescope to buy time for this rescue mission.
Katalyst personnel are working on software patches and new control configurations to stabilize the LINK spacecraft. The success of the rescue hinges on their ability to regain precise attitude control. Future operations to capture the telescope will only proceed once the servicing craft is deemed healthy and functional.
