NASA’s Psyche probe snaps new Mars photos on its way to asteroid
NASA's Psyche spacecraft has provided a fresh look at the Martian landscape as it travels toward its primary target in the asteroid belt. The probe captured high-resolution imagery of the planet's southern highlands, including the 71-mile-wide Fournier crater and the cliff system known as Oenotria Scopuli. These images arrived as the mission completed a gravity-assist maneuver, which helps the probe adjust its trajectory and pick up necessary speed for its long-term voyage.
Beyond capturing photos, the mission team used this flyby to perform a full systems check. The spacecraft’s magnetometer recorded data as it moved through the region where solar wind interacts with the magnetic field of Mars. Additionally, the radiation-sensing spectrometer detected a predicted burst of particles from the surface. These tests ensure the equipment is prepared for the arrival at the metal-rich asteroid, which is the main objective of the mission.
The spacecraft is currently scheduled to rendezvous with the asteroid Psyche in the summer of 2029. Scientists believe this asteroid represents a remnant of an early planet's core, making the data it provides significant for understanding the origins of the solar system. The probe launched in 2023 and remains on course for its destination, with mission operators confirming that the recent flyby occurred on the exact trajectory required for a successful encounter.
This mission demonstrates the precision required for deep space navigation. By utilizing the gravity of planets like Mars, engineers control the speed and direction of the probe without relying solely on fuel. The team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory continues to monitor the instruments closely to ensure the probe remains in peak condition for the final stage of its flight.
