Rocket Lab achieved a new milestone this weekend with the successful launch of eight satellite platforms built for MDA Space. These satellites reached orbit on August 15, launching from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The hardware serves as part of a larger contract involving 17 units destined to support Globalstar’s direct-to-device communications and IoT services.

All eight units are currently operating on orbit. Rocket Lab confirmed that each satellite is generating power and performing as expected during the initial commissioning phase. This deployment is a core part of Globalstar’s ongoing network replenishment, which aims to improve mobile satellite reliability for global users.

These 500kg satellites rely on Rocket Lab's Lightning platform architecture. The design and construction occurred at the company headquarters in Long Beach, California. The platforms integrate various in-house components, including solar arrays, reaction wheels, and flight software. This vertical integration allows Rocket Lab to control costs and maintain schedules for complex orbital missions.

Beyond this specific contract with MDA Space, the Lightning platform serves as a production vehicle for other government and commercial programs. Rocket Lab is currently using this technology to support missions for the U.S. Space Force and the Space Development Agency’s Transport and Tracking Layer constellations. The recent launch further establishes the company as a key player in the growing constellation economy.
