The U.S. Space Force has awarded $615 million in new task orders to three companies for the development of satellites designed to track fast-moving airborne targets. This move marks the second round of procurement under the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator program. Rocket Lab confirmed its role in this effort, securing $397 million of the total funding. The company plans to deploy its next-generation Flatellite design, which is intended for large constellations. These satellites will be launched using the company's Neutron heavy-lift vehicle, with operations scheduled to begin later this year from Virginia.
While Rocket Lab and STR were named as participants, the identity of the third contractor remains classified. Space Systems Command stated that this decision stems from operational security protocols intended to protect sensitive mission profiles. The military has increasingly utilized specific contract vehicles to shield program details from potential adversaries.
This expansion of the satellite tracking program follows a previous $4.6 billion award granted to SpaceX earlier this year. According to Space Systems Command, the strategy relies on diversifying technical solutions across multiple partners. By engaging different companies, the military expects to gain performance advantages and field superior technology for airborne surveillance.
The use of these contract vehicles reflects a broader shift in how defense programs report technical progress. Exemptions within the National Defense Authorization Act allow for streamlined procurement processes. This approach is intended to speed up the development of critical space assets while maintaining necessary security standards regarding defense capabilities.
