SpaceX has successfully recovered the upper stage of its Starship rocket from the Indian Ocean after a difficult 24-day operation. The vehicle, known as Ship 40, completed a flight test on July 24 and performed a controlled landing in the water. Despite initial concerns from leadership that the recovery might fail due to rough seas, teams managed to secure the structure and tow it to shore near Christmas Island.

This recovery marks a notable achievement for the space industry. It is the first time an upper stage from a Starship test flight has remained intact enough to be brought back for inspection. While the vehicle spent nearly a month in saltwater and will not fly again, engineers plan to return it to the company headquarters in Texas for detailed study. The data gained from this inspection will inform future designs for the rocket program.

SpaceX developed Starship as a large-scale launch system designed for missions ranging from satellite deployment to long-term human travel to the moon and Mars. The program continues to move through a series of tests to refine its reentry and landing capabilities. The successful retrieval of Ship 40 provides the engineering team with physical hardware to analyze how the vehicle performed during its journey through the atmosphere.

Drone footage and coastal photos captured by wildlife photographer Chris Bray confirmed the arrival of the rocket section near the Australian territory. The massive scale of the hardware was evident as teams moved the 171-foot structure through the water. SpaceX is now preparing to transport the rocket section back to the United States for post-flight examination.
