SpaceX engineers are heading to Christmas Island to retrieve a Starship upper stage that splashed down in the Indian Ocean. The 52-meter piece of the spacecraft arrived off the coast after a July 24 launch from Texas, during which it deployed 20 non-functioning satellites before re-entering the atmosphere.

Local residents spotted the rocket stage floating near the island, leading to confusion as it initially resembled ships from a distance. The company is now working to move the hardware to safer, calmer waters to conduct a detailed analysis before transport back to Starbase.

While space debris remains a concern for global experts, the Starship vehicle appears intact. This recovery effort highlights the ongoing progress in reusability for later stages of rocket flight, which differs from traditional recovery focuses on first-stage boosters. Local officials on Christmas Island hope the unusual arrival brings interest to the remote territory's unique environment.
