A new arrival has joined the Blank Park Zoo family. Early Monday morning, a baby giraffe was born to mother giraffe Skye. The zoo had been monitoring Skye for several weeks and shared a live video feed of the birth as it happened shortly after 7:00 a.m.
The calf entered the world around 8:03 a.m. Zoo staff observed the mother giraffe immediately beginning to clean and care for her newborn. The calf displayed impressive agility, successfully standing up within an hour of birth and beginning to nurse under its mother's supervision.
Visitors and fans can view footage of the newborn and its mother through the official Blank Park Zoo social media channels. The public also has the chance to participate in the naming process for the new calf during the upcoming Iowa State Fair. This successful birth is a significant milestone for the zoo and its ongoing conservation efforts.
