Bear sightings remain a concern for residents across the New Mexico metro area. Another incident occurred Sunday in Rio Rancho when a bear entered a neighborhood near Jane Circle SE and Golf Course Road SE.
Local resident Anna Moya experienced a close encounter while outside with her dogs. Her small dog, Tilly, confronted the animal. The situation escalated when the bear chased the dog, forcing Moya to act quickly to bring her pet to safety. The bear subsequently sought refuge in a tree in her backyard.
Officers from the Rio Rancho Police Department arrived on the scene shortly after the report. They coordinated with the New Mexico Department of Wildlife to resolve the incident. Wildlife officials successfully tranquilized the animal and removed it from the property without further harm to the residents or the animal.
Moya described the event as a frightening experience. She noted that she struggled to think clearly while the animal was in her yard. This encounter is part of a larger trend of increased bear activity in the region this summer.
The New Mexico Department of Wildlife advises homeowners to secure their properties. Residents should remove all food and water sources from their yards to discourage bears from entering residential areas. Keeping attractants clear is the most effective way to maintain neighborhood safety during this period of high activity.
