Bear that climbed up power pole dies, New Mexico Department of Wildlife confirms

The New Mexico Department of Wildlife confirmed the death of a bear in Union County this week. The incident began on Monday when the bear climbed a power pole east of Gladstone. Officials requested that the public avoid the area to allow the animal to descend safely.

Despite clear instructions from authorities to stay away, members of the public continued to gather near the pole. These individuals stopped to film and take photos of the bear, which kept the animal from coming down. The persistent presence of people prevented the bear from leaving the structure on its own.

Conservation officers, a Union County sheriff deputy, and representatives from the local power company were notified of the situation. By the time these responders arrived at the site, the bear had sustained fatal injuries.

The department issued a reminder to the public regarding encounters with wildlife. Officials stress that community members should keep their distance and leave animals alone when they are spotted in residential or utility areas. Human activity often causes animals to remain in dangerous positions, leading to preventable tragic outcomes like this one.
