A white-tailed deer is safe today after a narrow escape in Sussex County. The animal fell 12 feet into an abandoned well in Hopatcong and remained trapped until local officials arrived on the scene to help.
Officers from the Hopatcong Police Department coordinated with personnel from New Jersey Fish and Wildlife to execute the rescue. The team successfully lifted the deer from the brick structure on Friday, and it was released back into the wild immediately after.
Authorities issued a public reminder following the event. Property owners are encouraged to inspect their land for abandoned wells, uncovered holes, or other deep structures. These sites pose a clear risk to both human and animal safety. Taking the time to secure these hazards is a necessary step in protecting the local environment.
