Despite this limitation, local authorities feel confident in the diagnosis based on environmental patterns. The timing of the discovery in early September aligns with annual trends for EHD outbreaks in the region. The specific location and behavior of the animals prior to death offer further support for this conclusion.

EHD is a viral infection that primarily targets white-tailed deer populations. Transmission occurs through the bite of a specific midge, often referred to by the public as a no-see-um. These insects carry the virus and spread it during the feeding process. It is important to clarify that this virus does not travel through direct contact between deer. Animals do not transmit the illness via saliva or shared proximity to food and water sources. The concentration of deaths around water features is a consequence of the virus itself rather than an indication of contagion.

Infected deer develop dangerously high body temperatures as the virus progresses. This internal fever drives the animals to seek out water sources in a desperate effort to cool down. Consequently, many deer succumb to the disease in or near ponds and streams. Late summer heat exacerbates these conditions by shrinking available water. As surface water levels drop, the remaining puddles and ponds draw larger groups of deer to the same small areas. This creates an environment where a single infected midge can easily bite multiple animals in a short window of time.
