The death of Jackie, the beloved bald eagle from Big Bear Valley, has left many followers saddened. Jackie passed away on August 10 at the Ojai Raptor Center while receiving care for an undiagnosed illness. She was 14 years old and gained international attention through a live-stream camera that tracked her life and nesting habits with her partner, Shadow.
Following her death, wildlife experts conducted a necropsy to determine the cause of her decline. Her health had struggled after she was found near Dana Point Park in July following a territorial altercation. Despite intensive care, including a blood transfusion and oxygen therapy, her physical condition deteriorated due to various internal complications including blood clots and liver abnormalities.
Under federal law, the remains of bald eagles are managed through the National Eagle Repository. This institution facilitates the distribution of eagle remains, feathers, and parts to members of federally recognized tribes for use in religious and cultural practices. This process ensures the remains are handled with respect and provided to those who use them for traditional purposes.
Friends of Big Bear Valley expressed their grief and asked for patience as their team processes the loss. The public support for the eagle nest cam has been significant over the years, and Jackie remains a prominent figure in the history of California wildlife observation.
