The Bureau of Land Management has temporarily closed the Fan Creek Campground along the Nestucca River Corridor due to aggressive black bear activity. Officials report a mother bear and her cub have been approaching visitors and showing little fear of humans, creating a significant safety risk in the area.
This closure is 25 miles west of McMinnville. The Bureau of Land Management is working with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to address the situation. Visitors with existing reservations are being contacted to discuss alternative camping options nearby at the Dovre and Alder Glen campgrounds.
Wildlife experts note that fall is a prime time for bear activity as the animals increase their food intake before the winter hibernation season. Bears often return to locations where they have previously found food, such as trash cans or grills, reinforcing the need for campers to secure all food items and waste.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife advises the public to store all food and trash inside vehicles or bear-proof containers. They also emphasize that people should never leave pet food outdoors or allow trash to accumulate, as these habits draw bears into campsites and residential areas.
