What’s on Jackie the bald eagle’s wing? Wildlife experts explain

Fans of Jackie, the famous Big Bear bald eagle, have noticed tape on her wings during her recovery at the Ojai Raptor Center. Wildlife experts clarify that this is not due to fractures or broken bones. Instead, the adhesive is a carpal guard or bumper guard.

Birds possess the same bone structure in their wings as human arms. When at rest, what appears to be a shoulder is actually the bird's wrist. This skin is delicate and prone to injury while a bird heals in captivity. Staff apply these guards to provide support and prevent abrasions, ensuring the bird remains safe during rehabilitation.

Jackie is currently in stable but critical condition. She suffered a setback when her blood values dropped, but she has shown improvement following a recent blood transfusion. Caretakers report that she is eating on her own and displaying more energy. While the exact cause of her illness remains unknown, her packed cell volume has doubled since the weekend, which is a positive sign.
