Japan’s monkey sensation Punch turns 1, drawing a flood of well-wishing messages, in photos

Punch, the orphaned Japanese macaque at the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden, is celebrating his first birthday this week. The young primate gained worldwide attention for clinging to an orangutan plushie during his early days at the facility.

While Punch no longer relies on his stuffed companion and now socializes with fellow monkeys, he remains a major attraction. The zoo reported a massive influx of well-wishing messages from fans across the globe eager to mark the milestone.

Staff at the facility shared photos capturing the birthday activity, showing a playful and healthy young macaque. The birthday cards and displays drew visitors from across Japan, including Kumi Ishizawa, who traveled from Kobe to see the monkey.
