The Big Bear bald eagle community is witnessing a new chapter unfold at the nest. Friends of Big Bear Valley has officially named the young eagle that has been spending significant time with Shadow. Formerly known as KD1, the eagle is now called Kaydee. This decision marks a rare departure from the organization’s standard practice of not naming short-term visitors.

While the sex of the bird remains unconfirmed, observers note that Kaydee displays behaviors consistent with being female. The pair has been documented engaging in morning vocalizations and sharing roosting trees for several hours at a time. In one instance, observers noted that Shadow remained at his perch while the younger bird followed him throughout the day.

These interactions occur as the community continues to process the death of Jackie, Shadow’s mate of eight years. Jackie passed away on August 10 following intensive medical care at the Ojai Raptor Center. The loss of such a prominent local figure has drawn millions of viewers to the eagle cam, which has served as a center for wildlife education and conservation efforts.

Friends of Big Bear Valley remains cautious about characterizing the relationship between Shadow and Kaydee. There is no official confirmation that the two are mates, though the frequency of their contact suggests a growing bond. The organization asks the public to remain patient as nature determines the direction of this story.

Local agencies are currently planning an event to honor Jackie, tentatively set for October 3. Organizers are working to gauge interest and attendance to secure an appropriate venue for the public memorial. Supporters are encouraged to check the livestream updates for information regarding the tribute and further developments at the nest.
