A young river otter is currently recovering after being struck by a vehicle in Vacaville, California. The incident occurred near the intersection of Leisure Town Road and Foxborough Road, a location where wildlife encounters with vehicles happen far too often.
After the collision, the driver left the scene without stopping to help the injured animal. A local resident discovered the otter in the road and remained with it until animal control arrived to transport the creature to the Solano Wildlife Rescue and Education Center.
Medical teams at the center confirmed the otter suffered significant head trauma during the impact. Fortunately, the animal did not sustain any broken bones. Vets expect the swelling in the animal’s head to subside over the next seven to ten days while it undergoes rehabilitation. Staff are providing constant care to ensure the otter has the best chance of returning to the wild.
