The Scarborough Public Safety Team confirmed two shark sightings in the waters off Pine Point Beach on Tuesday. Local marine officials report that two sharks, each between 6 and 8 feet long, were spotted near the southern tip of Prouts Neck and the mouth of the Scarborough River.
Footage submitted by a local recreational fisherman captured the encounter. One video displays a shark swimming directly past a person on a paddleboard. A second video shows another shark trailing nearby. A shark expert from the New England Aquarium reviewed the footage and identified the animals as juvenile great white sharks.
While officials note that such encounters are rare in Maine, they ask that all beachgoers, surfers, and boaters remain vigilant. The town recommends that people avoid swimming near schools of bait fish or seal populations. Authorities continue to monitor the area in coordination with regional partners.
