Tracking Predators Through Canine Olfaction

Adam VanValkenburg spends hundreds of hours every summer trekking through the high-altitude terrain of his family’s four-generation cattle ranch in North Park. His objective is clear: finding where the One Ear wolf pack moves across the landscape. Tracking these apex hunters manually is a monumental task that occupies time otherwise spent on direct livestock protection. The need for precise data on predator movement remains a critical barrier for producers in Colorado who must guard against wolf-livestock conflict in rugged, timber-heavy pastures reaching 10,000 feet in elevation.

Project Scout offers a different approach to this perennial problem. Developed by the Montana-based nonprofit Working Dogs for Conservation and the Colorado organization Wild Ranch, the pilot program uses specially trained dogs to map the landscape through scent. The initiative, tested over 10 days in August, seeks to identify wolf travel corridors, scent-marking locations, and areas of repeated use. By providing ranchers with a visual map of these canine-identified hot spots, the program aims to make the placement of nonlethal deterrents significantly more efficient.

Testing the Efficacy of Odor Landscape Mapping

Charley, a 9-year-old Labrador trained to distinguish between wolf, coyote, and bear scat, served as the primary scout during the recent pilot. As the dog worked through the timber, he wore a tracking device that synced with software from Earth Ranger to log his path and areas of interest. This data allowed ranchers to overlay the dog’s behavioral alerts onto a map, pinpointing exactly where human presence or automated scare devices should be prioritized.

Chip Isenhart, founder of Wild Ranch, noted that current methods of tracking wolf movement often feel like reading tea leaves. Data from state wildlife agencies is frequently too broad to provide actionable intel for a specific ranch. By contrast, the canine approach maps the terrain from the predator's perspective. It highlights the natural funnels and fence crossings that wolves favor, turning guesswork into a targeted strategy. Isenhart stressed that while this tool is not a silver bullet, it complements existing technology like camera traps and biometric livestock tags.

Bridging the Rural-Urban Gap

Beyond the technical application, the project carries social significance in a state marked by intense polarization over wolf reintroduction. The effort brought together diverse stakeholders, including the Rocky Mountain Wolf Project, which spearheaded the initial reintroduction ballot measure. Courtney Vail, board chair for the organization, observed that the collaboration represented a genuine attempt to build trust between those who championed wolf restoration and the producers managing the impacts of that policy.

Isenhart envisions a broader model where individuals can directly fund specific conflict-mitigation tools for ranchers. This approach aims to build transparency and foster direct relationships between urban donors and rural producers. As ranchers like VanValkenburg continue to manage the presence of apex predators in their backyards, tools that minimize labor and increase protective efficiency remain essential. The success of Project Scout will ultimately depend on whether it proves scalable across larger, more varied terrains, but for now, it represents a practical effort to replace resentment with shared problem-solving.
