Polish Big Man Jakub Urbaniak Commits to BYU
BYU basketball has added size to its frontcourt with the commitment of Polish forward and center Jakub Urbaniak. The 23-year-old arrives in Provo following a professional season with WKS Slask Wroclaw in the top division of Polish basketball. Standing at 6-foot-9, Urbaniak brings a proven motor and active rebounding presence to the Cougars lineup.
During his most recent campaign across 55 games, he averaged 8.9 points and 5.7 rebounds. He demonstrated efficiency from the floor, hitting 53 percent of his shots. His perimeter game is a factor as well, as he connected on 34 percent of his three-point attempts throughout the season. Coaches plan to integrate his skills into pick-and-roll schemes and count on his ability to generate second-chance opportunities.
While his athleticism and energy are clear assets, his transition to the Big 12 will present challenges given the physical stature of conference opponents. He turns 24 in January and carries one year of remaining eligibility, making him an immediate piece for the current roster. With this addition, the team has two remaining scholarship slots, and staff members are expected to target another big man to bolster the paint rotation.
Urbaniak joins a core group that includes Rob Wright and Collin Chandler. His arrival provides depth as the program prepares for a rigorous schedule against conference rivals. Fans can expect him to compete for the starting spot as the team finalizes its rotations for the upcoming season.
