Eight conferences form alliance to improve 'quality, consistency' of officiating in women's college basketball

Eight Division I conferences have formed an official alliance to standardize and improve officiating in women's college basketball. This partnership includes the ACC, American Conference, BIG EAST, Atlantic 10, Big South, Coastal Athletic Association, Ivy League, and Metro Conference.

The initiative focuses on recruiting, training, and retaining officials through a shared system of evaluation and oversight. Pualani Spurlock-Welsh will lead the effort, tasked with managing the development of personnel across the member leagues. This structure creates a defined pipeline where less experienced officials gain training in smaller conferences before moving to high-profile games in larger leagues.

Commissioners from the involved leagues view this as a strategic investment in the long-term health of the game. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips noted the necessity of grooming new talent to ensure consistent officiating standards across the board. While these conferences had existing ties, the new formal structure delegates oversight responsibilities to ensure accountability and growth.
