This decision effectively accelerates the NCAA five-in-five eligibility model, which was originally slated for 2027.
For the BYU Cougars, this creates a new window of opportunity. The team currently holds two open roster spots and has a significant need for depth at the center position. Jaxon Kohler, a Michigan State veteran and Utah County native, has emerged as a primary target. Kohler brings proven experience from his time in the Big Ten, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2025.
Kohler’s potential return to Utah is supported by his background at Wasatch Academy and his existing ties to the area. He has already held virtual discussions with head coach Kevin Young. The possibility of him joining the program is viewed by analysts as a major upgrade for BYU.
