L.J. Cason transfers to Miami: Michigan PG only player to leave after Mike Boynton replaces Dusty May
L.J. Cason is moving to Miami. The former Michigan point guard entered the transfer portal after coach Dusty May left the Wolverines for the Dallas Mavericks earlier this summer. Cason remains the only player from Michigan's national title team to seek a new program following the coaching change.
Cason is expected to miss the upcoming 2026-27 season due to an ACL injury suffered in February. Because of the NCAA's current five-for-five eligibility rules, Cason will use a season of eligibility while he recovers. Before his departure, May noted the goal was to have Cason back in practice by November, though the timeline for his return to competition remains cautious.
Despite the coaching turnover, the rest of Michigan’s roster chose to remain in Ann Arbor. Key contributors, including Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney, opted to stay and play for the incoming head coach, Mike Boynton Jr. The program maintains most of its core talent as it transitions into the new era under Boynton's leadership.
Cason, who ranked as a top prospect in the 2026 transfer portal rankings, averaged 8.4 points and 2.4 assists per game as a freshman. Miami continues to build its roster under head coach Jai Lucas following a 26-win season. The Hurricanes have been active in the portal this offseason, adding several key pieces alongside Cason to maintain their status as a top contender within the ACC for the coming years.
